Burjeel Medical City Launches Advanced Balance Lab to Enhance Comprehensive ENT Services
The lab is dedicated to the comprehensive diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of balance and vertigo disorders
Abu Dhabi: Burjeel Medical City (BMC), the flagship facility under Burjeel Holdings, has unveiled a state-of-the-art Balance Lab within the Burjeel ENT Head & Neck Institute. This new facility is dedicated to the comprehensive diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of balance and vertigo disorders, further strengthening BMC’s advanced offerings in otolaryngology (ear, nose, throat) and head & neck surgery.
The Balance Lab was officially opened in the presence of Dr. Shamsheer Vayalil, Founder and Chairman of Burjeel Holdings, Mr. John Sunil, Group CEO of Burjeel Holdings, alongside Dr. Mujtaba Ali Khan, CEO of BMC, and other senior officials.
“The opening of our Balance Lab represents a significant step in our ongoing commitment to delivering world-class, patient-centered care. By leveraging cutting-edge technologies and a multidisciplinary approach, we are enhancing the accuracy and precision of diagnoses while redefining the standard of care for individuals affected by balance and vertigo disorders. We are proud to lead the way in innovative healthcare, empowering our clinical teams and elevating the quality of life for every patient we serve with the highest level of expertise and support,” said Mr. John Sunil.
Specialized Focus on Balance and Vertigo Disorders

Designed to address a wide range of balance and vertigo conditions affecting all age groups, the Balance Lab utilizes a structured testing protocol to accurately diagnose and quantify the underlying causes of dizziness and imbalance. These conditions can result from various factors, including inner ear disorders, neurological issues, strokes, muscle weaknesses, and peripheral neuropathy.
The Balance Lab is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to assess and rehabilitate individuals with balance and vertigo disorders. Utilizing the latest-generation Vestibular Nystagmography (VNG), Video Head Impulse Test (VHIT), rotatory chairs, and TRV chairs specifically designed for persistent Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), the lab accurately identifies, localizes, and quantifies balance system impairments. With tools like Computerized Dynamic Posturography, the lab can simulate various scenarios, including visual and movement-based conditions, allowing for early diagnosis of balance disorders that might otherwise remain undetected. The lab also plays a crucial role in rehabilitation, offering tailored therapy programs designed to address long-term challenges and prevent falls. These advanced tools enable early detection and precise localization of balance system impairments, facilitating targeted treatment plans and effective rehabilitation strategies.
“Our Balance Lab is a unique facility that combines all essential diagnostic and rehabilitation equipment with advanced software and functionality. This integration allows us to diagnose even the most challenging conditions early and support effective rehabilitation through a multidisciplinary approach,” said Dr. Shaik Irfan Basha, Director of the Burjeel ENT Head & Neck Institute.
Advanced Hearing Aid Services

In addition to balance services, the institute has introduced a hearing aid booth equipped with advanced technologies, offering patients a range of hearing aids and comprehensive services including fitting, calibration, programming, troubleshooting, ear molds, swim plugs, and tinnitus masking devices. This addition enhances the clinic’s ability to provide personalized and efficient hearing care.
The introduction of advanced technologies and services in the balance lab and hearing aid booth is expected to bring significant improvements in patient care across several dimensions, including diagnosis accuracy, treatment outcomes, patient engagement, and overall patient experience.
Burjeel Holdings Strengthens ESG Commitment with ‘Better By Nature’ Initiative
Abu Dhabi, UAE, 26 November 2024: In a significant step toward advancing its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals, Burjeel Holdings, a leading super-specialty healthcare services provider in the MENA region, has unveiled the ‘Better By Nature’ initiative, a program that combines environmental stewardship with employee engagement. A key highlight of the initiative is the Group’s commitment to planting a tree for every employee on their birthday— an effort expected to add approximately 13,000 trees annually to the tree cover. This not only celebrates the employees but also raises environmental awareness and contributes to enhancing the green landscape of the city. The program reaffirms the Group’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2040 and aligns with the UAE’s broader sustainability vision.
To mark the launch, Burjeel Holdings employees gathered at Jubail Mangrove Park in Abu Dhabi to plant mangroves. The event was led by Mr. Safeer Ahamed, Chief Operating Officer of Burjeel Holdings, and Mr. Muhammed Shihabuddin, Chief Financial Officer of Burjeel Holdings, underscoring the leadership’s dedication to building eco-conscious practices across the organization.

The initiative aligns with the UAE’s ambitious goal to plant 100 million mangroves by 2030, a key component of the nation’s strategy to combat climate change and enhance biodiversity. Mangroves, often called nature’s guardians, play a critical role in sequestering carbon, protecting shorelines, and supporting diverse ecosystems. This innovative step further emphasizes Burjeel Holdings’ dedication to sustainability while actively involving its workforce toward a greener planet.
‘Better By Nature’ is part of Burjeel Holdings’ broader ESG strategy, which focuses on cultivating a Healthy Environment, Healthy Community, Healthy Governance, and Healthy System. By involving employees in meaningful ecological activities like mangrove planting, the Group aims to embed sustainability into every aspect of its operations and create a measurable environmental impact.
“At Burjeel Holdings, sustainability is more than a commitment—it is a shared responsibility and an integral part of our vision for a healthier future. Through initiatives like ‘Better By Nature,’ we are taking meaningful action to combat climate change, preserve natural ecosystems, and engage our employees in creating a positive environmental impact. This is just the beginning of our journey toward achieving carbon neutrality and aligning with the UAE’s ambitious sustainability goals,” said Mr. John Sunil, Group CEO of Burjeel Holdings.
The Better By Nature launch event also featured activities such as kayaking and yoga sessions, building a sense of unity and well-being while reinforcing the connection between physical and environmental health.
From In-Utero Surgery to 135 Days in NICU: An Emirati Baby’s Incredible Fight for Survival
Abu Dhabi: From the 12-week fetal scan during which a serious fetal defect was detected to undergoing in-utero surgery, a specialized EXIT procedure at birth, and major surgery to repair his diaphragm at 6 days old, baby Saif’s arrival into this world was fraught with challenges. After a 135-day stay in the NICU at Burjeel Medical City (BMC), Abu Dhabi, the little one emerged victorious, and is set to go home with his parents. Baby Saif’s parents, an Emirati couple from Al Ain, are relieved by the miraculous recovery of their newborn son following a complex medical journey that began even before his birth.
A Difficult Diagnosis
Latifa and her husband were overjoyed when they learned they were expecting their first child after five years of marriage following IVF (In vitro fertilization). Their initial excitement turned to concern at a 12-week scan when it was discovered that the baby had a serious diaphragmatic defect, causing his bowel and liver to herniate into the thorax.
The diagnosis was a blow to the couple. “It was difficult to hear that our baby might not survive due to his complex health condition or that the pregnancy might not be completed,” recalls Latifa.
They sought out specialists who could provide assistance and finally consulted Dr. Mandeep Singh, Consultant, Fetal Maternal Medicine and Obstetrics, Kypros Nicolaides Fetal Medicine and Therapy Center at BMC. Learning that specialized care was available within the country, they decided against traveling abroad for treatment.
As the pregnancy advanced, it was clear that the defect was severe, and this had led to both lungs being severely compressed. The chances of the baby surviving with such a serious defect are around 10-15%.
Their only hope was to undergo a complex in-utero procedure called FETO procedure (Fetal endotracheal occlusion procedure), in which a balloon is placed in the baby’s trachea using a fetoscope to encourage lung growth.
Dr. Mandeep
Dr. Mandeep leads the team of doctors managing the case. Other members of the team included Dr. Iviano Ossuetta (Consultant and Director of Neonatology), Dr. Mussadaq Inayat (Consultant Neonatologist), Dr. Ahmed Omran (Consultant Obstetric Anesthesiologist), Dr. Shaikh Irfan Basha, (Consultant Otorhinolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery), Dr. Rajasekhar Cingapagu, (Specialist, Pediatric Surgery), and Dr. Kesava Ramakrishnan (Consultant Pediatric Intensive Care Unit).
When Latifa first heard about the interventional procedure that would take place when her baby was still in her womb, she was filled with fear and anxiety. However, the medical team reassured the couple and they decided to go ahead with the procedure.
Overcoming Challenges
At 27 weeks gestation, the FETO procedure was performed successfully with the help of Dr. Mauricio Herrera (visiting physician and fetal medicine specialist). However, the mother faced a setback when she went into preterm labor shortly afterwards and started leaking amniotic fluid. With careful management, the pregnancy continued, and Latifa stayed in the hospital for the remainder of her pregnancy.
At 34 weeks, when she went into labor, the medical team performed a specialized operation known as EXIT (Ex-utero intrapartum treatment), which allowed the baby to be partially delivered while still attached to the placenta, allowing him to receive oxygen from his mother as the medical team stabilized his breathing before delivering him. During this time, Dr. Irfan Basha punctured the balloon and inserted an endotracheal tube to help Saif breathe. The baby was then delivered and transferred to the NICU. Later, baby Saif underwent major surgical repair of the diaphragm at 6 days old by Dr. Rajasekhar.
For Latifa, seeing her baby in the intensive care unit for premature babies brought mixed feelings of pain, joy, and fear. The couple traveled daily from Al Ain to Abu Dhabi to be by their baby’s side and ensure he received the best care possible. “It was a challenging time. My husband and family supported me, giving me the confidence that this would pass. The hospital felt like a second family, providing us with compassionate care. I am grateful to the UAE for its advanced healthcare system, which allowed us to stay close to our family and loved ones,” said Latifa.
Getting Ready to Go Home
Four-and-a-half months later, baby Saif is all set to go home soon. “We are very pleased that baby Saif’s condition has greatly improved. In the last few months, he has overcome critical health challenges as our entire team worked together to deliver the best care. We are hopeful that we can continue to offer this treatment to any baby in a similar situation,” said Dr. Mandeep.
The Kypros Nicolaides Fetal Medicine & Therapy Center in Abu Dhabi has successfully managed numerous complex congenital malformations. It is one of the first centers in the UAE to perform in-utero spina bifida repair and continues to perform many such successful procedures.
